Speeding through Dry Sandford
Jun 25 2008, 6:29 AM EDT
There is a motorcyclist who insists on significantly exceeding the speed limit through the village on a regular basis. Yesterday (June 23rd) he was tearing down Lashford Lane just as the children were coming out of Dry Sandford School. I hope he can explain to the parents of any child he kills or injures that it was really, really important that he be allowed to do this. Residents have tried to signal to him to slow down and are greeted with rude gestures. If anyone knows who this is can they explain to him that what he's doing is dangerous?

I am sick of speeding vehicles generally through the village. I travel to work through Dry Sandford and Gozzards Ford and the amount of vehicles coming the other way breaking the speed limits is frightening. I also think that the stretch of road from Gozzards Ford to the Marcham Road should be reduced to 50mph from national speed limit. There are so many accidents along that road by the Shippon turn that something needs to be done.

Allow me to declare three interests.1. I am a local resident fronting onto Lamborough Hill. 2 . I am a car driver. 3. I am a supporter and enthusiast of the concept of Neighbourhood Watch. In this overcrowded island there is now little opportunity to enjoy the potential of even the most modest road going machine. 30 mph is from a driver’s perspective little more than walking pace, and as to avoiding children playing on the streets , one rarely sees this in semi-urban situations. Nevertheless there are speed limits assessed to represent the reasonable interests of all individuals in our society. For the driver, adhering to the speed limits is a frustration to which one will submit at least from time to time. In our heavily regulated society I suggest that one may indulge ones temptation to speed in an area where a) one knows that it is unlikely to cause an accident and b) is unlikely to be monitored. Thus I would suggest that most speeding is perpetrated by either local people or those who know and use the road frequently. If it were to become known that local residents were recording on our village website the incidence and registration of vehicles seen to be travelling at enhanced speed, might this not represent a potential source for insurance companies, police etc. in reviewing ones driving record in respect of ones involvement in any future accident. And might this potentially accumulating portfolio not in itself provide an effective incentive to eliminating speeding. I should like to see such a scheme started in the village and for it to be extended to misuse of mobile phones while driving. Signed - Sage 2 out of 3 found this valuable. Do you? |

Although I agree with your sentiment I would be totally be oppposed to any scheme where the liberties of the many could be abused at the whim of the few. The potential for a scheme like that to be abused is huge. Insurances raised because of perception or bias would leave many a would be "speed spotter" wide open to litigation if challenged

Bear in mind the fact that to publish such details may lead to all sorts of problems. IF I were to speed, and my details published, I would not be a happy bunny and neither would the person/s who decided to post those details.

30 mph in built up areas is the maximum permitted speed. If you go over it and get caught you are in no position to say you were not speeding. Regardless of wether the UK is over crowded or not. We don't want Kangaroo courts or public lynching mentality. Use the proper channels. Ie the police. I recall a police van was parked in Wootton on Monday evening at around 6pm taking pictures.
